In a time when creators dared to assemble their very own most favorite team, without mandate to include movie stars… this team is very close to your cosmic friend's cosmic heart. Doesn't always have to be Iron Man and Thor. These (mostly) mortals held their own against Atumma, The Beyonder, the Masters of Evil, and the assembled Gods of Olympus.

The West ist the Best! From the days of the West Coast Avengers– Tigra, La Espirita, Mockingbird were there from the beginning and all took part in Steve Engelhart's Lost In Space-Time Saga. Scarlet Witch joined them when John Byrne took over the series.

The Invisible Girl

Sue is one of those characters who actually grew and matured through her history. From a damsel in distress, often wearing an apron over her costume when making food for the family, (not shining a good light on how some of these early Marvel creators perceived women) she became a fierce fighter under John Byrne, when she changed her name to Invisible Woman, and has been ever since. Kinda neat to see this development as a whole.

Dark Ms Marvel (Dr Karla Sofen / Moonstone)

From the days of Siege and Dark Avengers in the 2000s, when she took up the mantle of Ms Marvel in Norman Osborne's Dark Avengers. 

I also drew her in her classic 1980s Moonstone look and her Meteorite costumee from the original Thunderbolts run.

Yellowjacket

Rita DeMara stole the identity and abilities of Yellowjacket in the 80s during the "Under Siege" storyline as one of the Masters of Evil. Thereafter, her story becamekind of convoluted, but she fought on the side of the Avengers a couple times.

Spider-Gwen

Spider-Gwen was probably THE breakout character from Marvel comics in 2014.

Originally just a alternate reality take on the Spider-Man cosmos, she took tumblr and the fans by storm, and has now her ongoing series, the first issue of which became a collector's item. Doesn't happen so much these days anymore!

Marvel comics' Dr. Karla Sofen aka Moonstone!

First encountered her in the Avengers comics, where she took part in the infamous "Siege" of Avengers Mansion.

Later, she was a member of the original Thunderbolts, as Meteorite.

Scott Lang aka Ant-Man II

I know Hank Pym is the original guy, but when I first read Marvel, Scott was wearing the costume, while Pym was semi-retired, so I always enjoy Scott popping up, like last year in the FF series by Fraction and Allred.

It was legendary when he and the Wasp single-handedly took down Titania and the Absorber in The Avengers #275. A nice roundup about those formative years of his career can be found here.

Toxic Doxie

June Covington aka Toxic Doxie, originally created by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Rios, as she appeared in the second incarnation of the Dark Avengers and in the Thunderbolts (Vol1) series, where she filled the role of the Scarlet Witch.

She has genetically altered her body to produce certain poisons and chemicals, and is a genius level bio chemist.

Really enjoyed that Thunderbolts run by Jeff Parker, he does great team books with oddball characters. I’ve also drawn her
 more recent costume from the Avengers Assemble comic series.

I’ve drawn several other versions of the Wasp, showcasing her changing designs throughout the decades:

Black Cat

Tribute-time!
Tonight it’s Black Cat, real name Felicia Hardy. Originally a villain, she fell for Spider-Man later on, and teamed up with him to fight crime. Alas, she had no interest in puny Parker, only in his alter ego, so the relationship broke apart.

A fun-loving risk taker and always unpredictable, she popped in and out of Peter’s life many times thereafter, usually causing trouble one way or another, but also proving to be a true friend when he needed one.

As a kid, I made up my own super-heroes, who often were variations on the Marvel and DC characters. There were some original ones, other were straight rip-offs. For example I had a Hulk-ish character, and a She-Hulk-ish one as well. They were not green, but- red! So when red Hulk and red She-Hulk emerged in the Marvel universe, it was strange to see them, almost felt like- "Hey! Young Beholder had this idea first!" So here's Red She-Hulk in all her glory, enjoy...

Mockingbird, from the days of the West Coast Avengers! Always loved the shorter hair with ponytail– Oh those sunny days in California, clashing with Graviton and the Zodiac Gang… arguing with Hawkeye…good times.

She was one of those staples of 80s comics. Then of course in the 90s they killed her, and now she’s back, and even made it into Agents of Shield, or so I heard…
