Stardust from AC Comics' FemForce

Another discovery on THE BEHOLDER's travels throught the multiverse: This is Stardust, alias Dr. Mara, a superhero in AC Comics' FemForce titles. She's actually an alien scientist, and went through few changes during the long FemForce history, but this is her most recent incarnation.

Redrawn German Avengers Comic

On his mysterious travels to the outer limits of perception, THE BEHOLDER has encountered many different worlds. One of them can be seen here, recreated in THE BEHOLDER's own special way.

On the left: Original cover by George Perez and Tom Smith; Marvel Deutschland/Panini Comics 2000.
If you also feel the need to remake some of your favorites,  the Covered blog is no more, but you can send it to this place instead.

The Many Faces of Jenny Everywhere

It's fascinating to see the different incarnations of our favorite dimension-shifting, open source character. The Beholder wanted to pay tribute and homage to some of the versions out there, by redrawing their designs in his own, unimitable way…

This is Jenny Everywhere Blue, from
Gwendolyn Patton's Jenny Everywhere Infinite: QuarkTime.
In this comic alone, there are many different versions of Jenny.
This is JennyDavid, from the time when she merged with her boyfriend
into a powerful being. Read about it in the classic story Soulless Mate,
written by Alex Hernandez, with artwork by Scott D. M. Simmons.

And finally, something that might be not quite safe for work, even though it's utterly harmless:
A drawing of Jenny's incarnation in the naturist comic The Bare Pit. The Bare Pit is created by Steven Crowley, who'll hopefully find the time to resume the strip next year.

All rights for these specific designs are of course with the individual creators. Hope you liked these– I will post some more soon.

Octobriana

Despite her questionable origin, I couldn't resist to draw her–
here is The Beholder's version of the Russian Revolutionary Beauty, Octobriana.

Octobriana is "the spirit of the Russian Revolution", and a licence-free character. In the spirit of communism, she belongs to the people, and any creator can make up stories with her. Supposedly she was created in the 1960s by a group of dissident Russian artists calling themselves Progressive Political Pornography (PPP).

However, this was apparently a hoax. The true story seems to be, that Czech writer Peter Sadecký enlisted the two artists Bohumil Konečný and Zdeněk Burian to create a comic with a character called "Amazona". But Sadecký escaped to the west, stealing the art-work and published it under the new name Octobriana, with changed communist back-story, and adding the red star on her forehead. So the creation of this "license-free" character is not quite kosher to say the least. The result however, and the colorful yarn that Sadecky spun surrounding it, is quite intriguing.

Read more about her here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octobriana .

Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Fest Report

I had a lot of fun at the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Fest last weekend. It was my first time "flying solo" at this event, I was so grateful to be invited! And so many people came; plenty of friends and colleagues visited my table, and even people I had just met at NY ComicCon came back. Besides my mini-comics, children's books and prints, I had an advance copy of my forthcoming graphic novel Peanut with me.

I am happy to say that sales-wise, this was the single most successful day at any of the festivals I attended this year (MoCCA, NY ComicCon, and the small but very cool Prints Alive). It's especially exciting to meet people who already know some of my Beholder Comics and are coming back for more! That means a lot to me.

With Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons!
A familiar set-up… with some new wares!

Fellow cartoonist Anuj Shrestha brought me lunch. Thanx Anuj!
View of the upstairs, were my table was (yes, it's a gym!)
The three cover variations of the brand-new Tales To Behold 3
Good bye BCGF 2012, it was a blast and I am so happy that I could be part of it! Thanks to Gabe, Dan and Bill for putting together another amazing festival!

AC Comics' FemForce

During The Beholder's travels through the universe, the world of AC Comics caught his eye, especially the super-powered adventurers group called FemForce. The characters depicted are Synn ("The Girl From L.S.D."), Nightveil, and Miss Victory.

AC Comics uses a lot of redesigned Golden Age super-heroes that time forgot and fell into public domain, and mixes them with original characters. Nightveil is based on the Golden Age superhero Phantom Lady. Miss Victory originally created by artist Charles Quinlan and an unknown writer. Synn is an original creation of Paragon Comics / AC Comics.

Journey Into Misery 4

Yes, we are starting a brand-new chapter here on The Beholder, serializing the next chapter in the astonishing, mind-boggling mis-adventures of The Terrific Two. Starting Monday!

RePaneled: Spuk Geschichten # 327

This one was done for the blog RePaneled, it's a loving tribute to the German comic series Spuk Geschichten (Spooky Stories). On the left, you can see the original panels, from issue # 327.

About Spuk Geschichten(Spooky Stories): A guilty pleasure, as it was very pulpy, with monsters constantly running after half-naked women. It was one of the few series that were actually available at newsstands in Germany.

Original Artist: Jesus Pena,
(although it's spelled with a "wave" above the "u", and a pointy thingy pointing up, above the "n".
Publisher: Bastei (Germany)

New York Comic Con 2012

Great times last week at New York Comic Con. Many mini-comics were sold, and a nice time was had by everybody. The experiment was a full success and I might have to come back next year!

Besides conversations with all-time greats such as Herb Trimpe, Rich Buckler and Bon Wiaceck I also got to meet Erik Larsen and tell him how much I've been enjoying his work.
Finally, this was the place to meet actual super-heroes in person, a prime exable of which can be seen to the left. I couldn't wish for a better endorsement of Journey Into Misery 4 than by Mr. West Coast Avengers himself, the amazing Hawkeye!

The Beholder does Open Source Characters

The Beholder was inspired to interpret some characters from around the internet.

Find out more about Open Source characters  at the Publicomain Superheroes Wiki, the Free Universe Project and the corresponding forum. To find out more about Open Source Characters, please visit the Public
Gwenna is not really an Open Source character, but an obscure Golden Age character  that fell into Public Domain and came to new life in a webcomic created by Jay042, where she and her partner actually run around the jungle sans fabric.

The characters of Astro-Man and Captain Prodigy are available for use by anyone, with only one condition. This paragraph must be included in any publication involving Astro-Man, in order that others may use this property as they wish. All rights reversed.

Carrie Madison (created by "SimonKirby") is free to use by anyone, and as mentioned, Gwenna's modern appearance is created by Jay042. Captain Prodigy is created by Michael P. aka Yzz, and Astro-Man is created by the Free Universe Community.

Bonus Update: A tribute to Stardust, the Super Wizard

As mentioned before, The Beholder has a peculiar fascination with the works of a mysterious earthling who sometimes went by the name of Fletcher Hanks.

This most elusive earthling created an outrageous universe of characters during the Golden Age of Cartooning. To find out more about his works, please refer to this website.

In the meantime, please enjoy this respectful tribute to Stardust, one of his more infamous creations.
