A tree can still drown. Having a lower metabolism than a mammal means they don't drown as quickly. During many floods, if a tree can keep its roots in the ground, then if the water recedes quickly enough, the trees can survive, but the water sticks around long enough, the tree will die if it can't breath. So switching into tree mode will only give him a little more time than being an air breathing mammal.
